After being awarded the license in the first event for the upcoming season in the Bundesliga, Vienna Austria also achieved an important victory in terms of sport. The Violets won their first match of the qualifiers at the WAC 1-0 on Saturday and are now four points clear of Carinthians. Gruber scored the golden goal for Austria's first win after the league division (11th). Wolfsburg's ballo saw yellow-red (65th).
Qualifying Group – Match 26
Apart from Bogey, another pillar, Altunashvili, was injured in the WAC. Austria had to play Kradzic and Fischer, while Holland and Wells replaced the yellow suspended duo in defensive midfield. Schmitt started in place of Blavodic Martins in defense and Huskovic in attack. The latter was in the squad despite suffering a broken nose during the robbery in front of an ATM on Monday evening. The U-21 national striker also did without a specially-made face mask when he came on as a substitute in the 58th minute.
Austria were the most dangerous team in front of 3,649 spectators at the Lavandal Arena. After a cross from Ranftl, Gruber was allowed to calmly receive the ball in the penalty area. Austria's top scorer sent a pass to Veradsnick and shot into the far corner. It was the 28-year-old's tenth league goal of the season, but his second since October.
Vienna clearly dominated the game. Ranftl fires a shot past WAC keeper Poneman (27th). The German appeared alone against and in front of Schmidt (39'), and turned a Gruber shot over the crossbar (42'). Two Holland shots (43') are blocked by Dijani. For WAC, which was not a threat in attack, only defense chief Baumgartner came close to scoring with a header before the break (44th).
Ballo saw yellow and red
After the break, Wells appeared in a good position in front of the Wolfsburg goal but crossed to Gruber who was separated from the ball (55th). On the other hand, substitute Bernhard Zimmermann's best WAC chance failed thanks to Austria goalie Fruchtl (63'). Two minutes later, Wolfsberg lost the ball. The attacker, who had already received a yellow card for an early foul, practically tackled Austrian defender Calvao on the ground.
Vienna relinquished their playmaking dominance due to their numerical superiority, but WAC could no longer create clear scoring chances. Ranftl misses the finish after Gruber's pass (83'). Vienna are now unbeaten in six games, despite the poor conversion of chances. They have lost just two of their last 18 league games. The WAC, on the other hand, is still waiting for its first qualifying group win. Former Austrian coach Schmidt's side have not scored in their last three games.
