Johannes Brahms: Song of Destiny for mixed choir and orchestra op 54. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Loebgesang op 52, a symphony cantata based on words from Holy Scripture (broadcast in 5.1 surround sound from the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg)
28. July 2024, 11:03
Two weeks after his 97th birthday, Herbert Blomstedt is a guest at the Salzburg Festival on the stage of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Singing Society – the Swedish-American conductor brings with him two works of romantic choral-orchestral literature.
It begins with Johannes Brahms’s “Bad Song,” based on Friedrich Hölderl’s poem, which tells of humanity mired in suffering and a longing vision of the blissful worlds of the gods. After that, the mood brightens markedly in Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdi’s “Löbgesang.” Titled both Second Symphony and Symphony Cantata, the work, after three relatively short instrumental movements, moves toward an expansive finale in which the singers joyfully begin to praise God: “Everything that has breath praises the Lord.”
