Severe hail storms caused extensive damage in Burgenland on Friday afternoon. Austrian Hail Insurance said in an evening broadcast that damage to agriculture was 1.3 million euros, according to preliminary assessments. The Neusiedl am See and Eisenstadt neighborhoods were particularly affected. According to the State Security Centre, around 30 fire brigade operations were recorded, mainly in northern Burgenland.

According to Hail Insurance, a total of 5,000 hectares of arable land, wine and fruit crops were primarily affected. “Due to climate change, hail events will become more intense and more frequent in the future,” said Kurt Weinberger, CEO of Hail Insurance.

Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., firefighters in Burgenland had to go out a total of 30 times to evacuate flooded basements, the state conservation center said. Most of the works were recorded in northern Burgenland, and two were in the Gussing district.
