Retaliation: Israel Strikes Targets in Iran

Revenge

The Israeli military launched airstrikes against targets in Iran “in response to the Tehran regime’s continued attacks on Israel.” Israel speaks of “precision strikes against military targets”. Iran’s state media reported explosions in the capital on Saturday night, and the Iranian military appeared ready for another counterattack.

“There is no doubt that Israel will receive a befitting response to any action,” Tasnim news agency quoted an anonymous Iranian government source as saying. Tasnim is considered the mouthpiece of Iran’s elite armed forces, the Revolutionary Guards.

State media had previously portrayed the Israeli attack as harmless. State radio said the explosions were triggered by air defenses in the western part of the capital, Tehran. Early in the morning (local time), explosions were heard in the city center and air defense fire was seen. Air defenses were said to have been activated. It was initially not entirely clear which targets were hit.

According to earlier reports by US broadcasters, Israel did not attack nuclear power plants or oil fields, but instead focused on military facilities. The US said that night that Israel had been informed in advance of the planned attacks.

Attacks in Syria too

Tasnim reported that US and Israeli warplanes were overhead in several Middle Eastern countries. Syrian state media reported that the Israeli military also struck targets in southern Syria.

The Israeli attack had been expected for days. On October 1, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Air Force fired about 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, in retaliation for targeted killings in Iran. Israel announced a military response after the rocket attack.

Israel has repeatedly made clear to the international community that “we will use all means at our disposal to protect Israeli citizens.”

Since the Gaza war began a year ago, Israel has been repeatedly attacked by Iran’s allies along the “axis of resistance.” In addition to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, these include militias in Iraq and Houthi rebels in Yemen.
