Six years ago, I and many others were very impressed by the beautiful indie game “Kris”: you have to guide a girl in a world full of hand-drawn, amazing 2D landscape, delicate puzzles and many great scenes.
In the unofficial sequel just released, it’s even better: “Neva” That’s the name of a new game from Spanish developer Nomada Studio, in which I control a warrior in a breathtaking, hand-drawn world. At my side was an animal companion, a white wolf with antlers. This animal goes by the name of Neva and is a very shy puppy at the beginning that I have to protect, guide and constantly encourage. As the game progresses, the legendary creature becomes a brave companion. It goes without saying that even a large wolf still likes to be scratched.
Surprisingly a lot of game
The colorful fantasy world of “Neva” is threatened by dark figures: the magnificent scenery withers and peaceful animals turn into monstrous beasts when black dream figures with white masks take over. And what’s more: large trees and entire landscapes break into floating pieces under their influence. The game is also influenced by Japanese animation studio Ghibli’s aesthetic. A dramatic story is told without words.
“Neva”Developed by Nomada Studios and distributed by Devolver Digital, it was released for Windows, PS4/PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
From the sidelines, I run, jump, and fight to save this world, me, and my wolf. In contrast to its semi-predecessor “Kris”, it is more challenging: there are always difficult climbs or fights. While “Gris” is a Metroidvania that slowly gets more difficult with no significant gameplay obstacles, “Neva” is definitely an action game. It will please those who want more classic gameplay with amazing graphics, but will frustrate others who got it without skill checks.

An emotional work of art
“Neva” is a feast for the eyes and ears: you rarely see such a beautiful game, you want to print each of the constantly changing scenes and frame them on the wall. Also solid is the soundtrack by Spanish electronic games musicians Berlin.
As for the game, “Neva”, as mentioned, is challenging, but fair and very attractive. However, my pet turned out to be the best: it really grew on me during the four or so hours we spent together playing. A beautiful, emotionally engaging piece of video game art.
