The full extent of the damage to the three-kilometer-long draw bridge that spans the Patapsco River was not initially known. The Baltimore Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It crashed into a ship and then crashed. According to US reports, the ship caught fire and sank after hitting a support pillar.
Several cars and apparently emergency vehicles reportedly fell into the Patapsco River below, US broadcaster CBS reports. Many people are considered missing by the US media.
