The Washington Post usually recommends the election — but not this year. Owner Jeff Bezos is said to be responsible for this. The “Los Angeles Times” magazine is also unlikely to make an election recommendation for Kamala Harris.
For the first time since 1988, the Washington Post did not endorse a candidate in this year’s presidential election. The paper did not endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, the paper said in an editorial published Friday. The press’ abstention from one of the most important elections in decades caused a stir. Over the past few decades, The Washington Post has mostly made election recommendations — and when it has done so, it has usually been for Democratic candidates. For the first time, Democratic candidate Harris received no endorsements from the capital’s newspaper this year. “The newspaper is returning to its roots,” wrote “Washington Post” boss William Lewis. The decision is in line with the values that The Washington Post has always upheld, which include respecting “human freedom in all its aspects.”
But there are other reasons behind it: the newspaper has been owned by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos since 2013. The Washington Post reported that he personally decided that an already written reelection recommendation for Harris would not be released.
Former Washington Post Editor-in-Chief Marty Baron: G. It’s “cowardice on the part of the newspaper, a victim of democracy,” wrote Barron on the online service X. Trump will see the decision as an “invitation for further intimidation” by Amazon founder Bezos. “The lack of spine in a company known for courage is troubling,” Barron continued.
The owner banned the “LA Times” election nomination
A few days ago, another traditional newspaper, the “Los Angeles Times” also refrained from recommending the election. Its owner had forbidden the editorial board to recommend Harris. Its boss, Mariel Garza, later resigned. The New York Times, on the other hand, expressed its support for Harris in late September and described his election as the only possible “patriotic decision.”
Shortly before the Washington Post announced the decision, the New York Post went public with a recommendation for Trump on Friday. Republican Right Choice, a newspaper owned by conservative media tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s group, wrote.
Trump thanked Trump for the “huge support” in a post on his Truth Community site. Two years ago, the New York Post wrote that the Republican Party was “unqualified” to be the country’s leader again. To justify, he cited his role in the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol by rabid supporters.
