Further storm warning after heavy rain

Heavy rain on Friday afternoon continued till Saturday night. A severe weather warning is still in effect, especially in Styria. In Vacha, a rock fall led to the closure of the Danube bridge.

Austria, particularly Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol, had severe storms on Friday. Due to heavy rains, the fire brigade continued to operate at times. Civil defense alert triggered in Styria. There were landslides and roadblocks in Salzburg.

Several buildings in the center of Salzburg’s Lungacht were flooded, operations manager and local fire brigade commander of Annaberg-Lungacht, Gerald Pbister, told Ö1. There were a total of 19 different locations: flooded cellars, mudslides. A celebratory concert was to take place in the church that evening. Around 100 firefighters from Annaberg-Lungötz and neighboring communities remained on duty into the night. The cleanup will continue on Saturday. According to ÖAMTC, Katschberg Straße (B99), Gerlos Straße (B165), Pass G Schütt Straße (B166) and Filzmooser Landesstraße are affected. Many cellars had to be evacuated.

Carinthia also experienced heavy rain

In Feldkirchen, Carinthia, more rain fell in two hours than ever before on a July day. However, according to the Carinthian State Alarm and Warning Center, they escaped with a black eye. Some streams overflowed their banks, requiring the evacuation of cellars and the removal of fallen trees. The danger of the Tibel River in the district town of Feldkirchen was avoided by careful opening. A concert in Flatnitz had to be canceled – the audience got stuck in the meadows with their cars. In Lake Worthersea, water rescue and fire services had to recover a detached boat.

Civil Defense Alert

In Styria, civil defense alarms were triggered in communities already hit hard by previous storms. 10,000 lightning bolts burst over Styria.
Heavy rain led to numerous fire brigade operations in many parts of Tyrol. The result is landslides, flooding and closed roads. Streams overflowed their banks.

Thunderstorms in Carinthia also brought a chill. Floods, landslides and hail are still expected in Carinthia and Styria.

Heavy rainfall can only be partially absorbed by the soil.

An EU directive requires Austria to enable storm alarms on cellphones from June 2022. However, the system is yet to be implemented. Testing isn’t scheduled to begin until the fall.

B3 closed near Spitz after rocks fell
