ÖBB modernizes routes – 5 minutes

ÖBB modernizes routes in Vienna and Lower Austria. Construction work is scheduled from June 29 to September 2, 2024, and will require the temporary closure of the Vienna S-Bahn main line and the southern line.

Thousands of passengers travel from Lower Austria to Vienna every day. The Vienna S-Bahn main line and its continuations to the north and south form the central backbone of local public transport in the Vienna metropolitan area. Today, around 700 trains run on the main line between Vienna Meidling and Vienna Floridsdorf on weekdays. Part of the infrastructure on the busy southern line between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt now requires an extensive “service” to further expand the overall railway system in the eastern region.

By the end of 2027

The track and numerous structural engineering facilities will be fully modernized by the end of 2027 to take passengers to their destinations reliably and comfortably. In addition to the modernization and digitization of the Vienna S-Bahn main line, platforms are being extended and parking and turning facilities are being constructed on the Northern Railway, Northwestern Railway and Southern Railway. Overall, the Vienna S-Bahn upgrade will result in improvements to the 170 kilometer track network, all of which are closely interwoven. Besides expanding the infrastructure, new trains will also be used in future. With the new double-decker trains, ÖBB will offer more seats for passengers in the eastern region from 2026.

Longer trains with more seats

The first construction project will be the expansion and replacement of the S-Bahn stations Wien Traisengasse and Wien Handelskai, which will be operational from October 2023. ÖBB is replacing tracks and switches on the southern line between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt and widening platforms to make room for longer trains with more seats. Modernization work is also underway on the Northern Railway between Vienna Süssenbrunn and Strashof.

In the period from June 29 to September 2, 2024, the new timetable applies on certain railway lines in Vienna and Lower Austria. There are no train services between Vienna Floridsdorf and Vienna Praterstern. ÖBB is setting up a train replacement service with buses on this route. Compared to the annual timetable, a reduced train service is available between Vienna Praterstern and Vienna Liszt. Alternatively, ÖBB tickets valid for selected alternative routes will be accepted.

North of Vienna

Trains on the REX1 route (Vienna Floridsdorf – Kanserndorf – Becklau route) are sometimes diverted via Vienna Stadtlau and Vienna Zimmering for longer distances. All other trains north of Vienna start/end or cancel at Vienna Floridstorf. Trains on line S1 with destination and departure station Marchec no longer run between Vienna Süssenbrunn and Marchec. An alternative train service with buses will be established between Vienna Süßenbrunn and Gänserndorf. According to the annual timetable, S1 line trains run hourly to/from Gänserndorf and extend to/from Marchec.

South of Vienna

The southern route has timetable changes between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt Hbf. No trains can run on the section between Bad Vöslau and Leobersdorf. Long distance trains run on detours. Trains on the CJX9 line start and end at Vienna Central Station and are diverted between Vienna Central Station and Wiener Neustadt. So no stops in Vienna Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Baden.
