165 km/h in 80 zone: Carinthian speeder flashed with someone else's car: no impound

With the 34th amendment to the Road Traffic Act, from March 1, 2024, speeders' cars can be impounded on the spot and then auctioned off – but not openly if the driver doesn't own the car. This is shown by the present case of Carinthia:

At 10:45 pm on Friday, an 18-year-old probationary driver's license holder from the Völkermarkt district was driving a car on the B70 from Völkermarkt towards Klagenfurt. He drove ahead of a civilian patrol of the Carinthia State Department of Transport. From a resting position, the man suddenly accelerated his vehicle. During the follow-up movement, the authorities were able to measure the local speed limit of 80 km/h by 85 km/h. As a result, the 18-year-old allowed his car to “roll” within the 70 km/h limit and exceeded the limit at 80 km/h.

Driver's license revoked

The man was then detained. Due to the violations, the driver's license was confiscated on the spot, but not the confiscation required by the StVO. “Since the driver and the owner of the vehicle are different persons, the car has not been impounded,” police said.
