The City of Vienna Marketing announced that night that there would be a special “encore” on New Year's Day. The Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's concert will be broadcast live from the Wiener Musikverein on the Riesenradplatz in the Prater to the Stephensplatz and Wintermarkt stages from 11:15 am.
According to City of Vienna Marketing, eight venues offered 80 hours of performances, from a Falco tribute show to waltz courses and a laser show. In addition to the town hall and the square near the Prater branch, the central stations this year are again Freiungen, Am Hof Square, Graben, Stephensplatz, Gardner Strasse and Neuer Markt.
According to organizers, more than two dozen food stalls served food and drinks along the festival mile. Town Hall Square was once again part of the event after a one-year hiatus. The Ringstrasse in this area was also closed from 10 p.m.
One of the centerpieces was the tribute show “Falco – In Concert” on the stage at Rathausplatz. Synchronized with the artist's performance recordings, Falco's original band covers many of his best numbers. Other artists were there, such as Alkbot frontman Roman Gregory, “Kabinenparty” rapper Skero, and actor Johannes Kirsch.
One item is again missing from the plan, intentionally: fireworks. For the benefit of people, animals and the environment, this will be avoided, according to Vienna Marketing City. Instead of big pyrotechnic displays, there will be an eight-minute laser show on the Rathausplatz to the sounds of the Danube Waltz.
As hundreds of thousands of people celebrated the New Year in Vienna, the police were once again out in the city with a large contingent. Officers will be deployed in uniform with special equipment and long weapons and in civilian clothes, the press office announced on Friday. The police are engaged in a manhunt during the New Year celebrations. In response to an APA inquiry shortly after 1 a.m., Vienna police said there were initially no significant incidents on New Year's Eve.
In addition to domestic incidents, a large number of incidents, especially in public places, are caused by, among others, the use of pyrotechnics. In addition, there is a generally high risk in Austria due to the current threat assessment of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the ever-increasing terror alert level. So there is a special focus on the New Year's Eve route in the city center of Vienna.
