Janic Sinner also won a new edition of the Australian Open final and is targeting the next major title of the season at the Tennis Masters in Miami. Defending champion Daniel Medvedev was not given a chance in the semi-finals 6:1, 6:2. With the convincing victory over world number four Russia, Sinner extended his annual streak to 21 wins from 22 matches.
“It felt good on the court today,” he said after showing his strength on 69 minutes. Medvedev certainly didn't feel great, saying, “He made a lot of mistakes that he doesn't normally make, and I took advantage of opportunities. I was expecting a really tough match.”
In Sunday's final, the 22-year-old will face Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) or Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria). Apart from the title in the Grand Slam highlight in Melbourne, Sinner also won the tournament in Rotterdam this season. He was eliminated only in the semi-finals of the Masters at Indian Wells.
The match between Sinner and Medvedev (28) is shaping up to be a permanent battle on the ATP Tour. The two rivals faced each other six times last year, making it their eleventh meeting in total. Sinner seems to have decoded Medvedev: after six defeats, he won his last five matches – after trailing 0-2 at the Australian Open.
If Sinner wins the title in Florida, he will move past Spain's Carlos Algarz into second place in the world rankings. Despite the loss, Medvedev remains safe in fourth place ahead of Olympic champion Zverev.
