According to data published by the National Statistics Office, last year, the year the pandemic broke out, there was an increase of more than 4,700 businesses over the previous year. The NSO reported that there were just over 130,700 businesses in 2020, an increase of 3.7% over the previous year.
The data shows that there were also 135 large businesses which provided the livelihood of two hundred and fifty people or more. Meanwhile, the number of businesses employing up to nine people increased by 4,619.
There has also been an increase in the number of businesses employing between ten people and fifty people. The largest number of businesses involved shops, including retailers. There was also a substantial amount of business in the car and motorcycle repair sector.
