The Government has announced that Cabinet has rejected the request for a presidential pardon made by the Degiorgio brothers, Alfred and George Degiorgio, and Vincent Muscat.
The government said the refusal to grant the pardon was in line with the advice of the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police. The Government said that the decision of the Cabinet is not only based on the party of the relevant institutions but is also in the national interest and justice.
Prior to the Cabinet meeting, Minister Carmelo Abela stated that in light of the baseless allegations made against him by Jason Azzopardi and the libel case he instituted against the same Azzopardi, he had decided to recuse himself. Minister Abela explained how he came to this decision “although there is no statutory or other reason for me to do so, but only to avoid anyone casting a suspicion of impartiality or doubt on the work of the Cabinet.”
