It has now been over a year since the start of the pandemic. This past year has been surreal, an unprecedented experience in our collective living memory. A time of restrictions, uncertainty, fear, disappointments, sickness and death. It has been a traumatic time not only for our country but for the whole world.
Today, as we celebrate Easter, the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we continue to struggle, but there is a new sense of hope, a welcome sense of renewal as our health professionals work around the clock vaccinating our population in a race against time and the apparent devastation of an oncoming third wave of this deadly virus.
As we move forward through this pandemic, we can finally, if hesitantly make out a glimmer of light at the end of this terrible tunnel. However, we must be aware that we are on the brink of a unique experience. The lessons we have learned over the past year must play a part in this new ‘normality’, especially how important, beautiful and valuable our humanity really is; how the spirit of community must never be neglected and how we must never ignore that what makes us who we are.
Yet, despite the challenging and painful situations we are currently living, the simple message of Easter remains the same; joy, gratitude and rebirth. For those of the Christian faith Easter is a reminder and encouragement that God in Christ continues to love and care for the whole world, overcoming death with life, conquering fear and uncertainty with hope. However, this Holy day which represents the promise of a new life and opportunity, the final victory over evil is also, in many ways, a metaphor for life for all people of goodwill, regardless of faith or creed.
This Easter, after the turbulence of the past year, it is worth remembering that while we are all in the same sea, we are not all in the same boat and while some of us can weather the storm in a comfortable boat, some can barely hold onto their meagre raft. With this in mind, there has never been a more appropriate time to recapture the meaning of the resurrection of Christ, a message which not only delivers hope but also preaches kindness and empathy, the same human attributes which have ultimately ensured our survival throughout the millennia.
And with hope in our hearts for a better tomorrow, may we wish all our readers a happy and blessed Easter!
