Minister for the Interior and National Security Byron Camilleri has published a clarification and confirmed that it is not true that work is underway on any scheme for people to adopt immigrants at their homes. Camilleri went on to say that whenever Malta’s strong position on the subject is reiterated, TV personality Peppi Azzopardi and others often write that they are willing to volunteer and keep an immigrant in their home.
“They have even contacted me about this. I told them that if they are that willing, they can help residents who are already in the open centres and therefore I put them in contact with AWAS,” continued Camilleri. He also reiterated that their demands will not temper the government’s position on the subject and Malta will continue to work to:
– Collaborate with Libya to prevent arrivals
– Return those who are not eligible to be here
– Relocate rescued persons after Malta has fulfilled its international obligations
