Police in Portland, Oregon in the United States claimed that they fired crowd control munitions and tear gas on Wednesday night, after a gathering of around 200 people started throwing rocks, lighting fires and also vandalise a United States immigration agency building.
The law enforcement officials declared this protest a riot for the second successive night, referring to the protest near the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office an “unlawful assembly”.
Ever since the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who was killed by a police officer said to be a white-supremist on May 25, protests against racism and police brutality have dominated the United States.
The protests in Portland, Oregon, have been some of the most violent, with occasional acts of arson, with the police officers sent to control the protests often being forced into using methods such as tear gas to manage the situation.
The protest on Wednesday began in the Elizabeth Caruthers Park, with protestors then marching towards the ICE building.
Through a post on Twitter, the police stated that the marchers have to disperse or else the police will have no other choice but to arrest people, use tear gas and even use crowd control and impact equipment and weapons.
The police stated that two people were arrested for “interfering with a peace officer and disorderly conduct”.
This followed the Portland riot on Tuesday, which involved protestors lighting fires, throwing rocks and smashing windows of county government offices.
The protests have been ongoing for months, and whilst there have been some peaceful protests during which police officers even took part, there were others that were violent and led to numerous injuries and police interventions.
On other occasions, looters sought to profit from the death of George Floyd, opting to break numerous windows of stores and steal items such as electronics and appliances, leaving the United States’ economy in a rough position.
Plenty of stores were forced to remain closed as they constantly repaired the damages or else closed everything as a precautionary move to reduce the chances of being looted.
