The Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar resigned from his post within the Police Force. In a news conference earlier this morning, Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister of Home Affairs, Byron Camilleri, announced the resignation and said that Carmelo Magri will be acting police commissioner until a new Commissioner is selected.
In his letter of resignation, Cutajar said the choice of a new prime minister requires a new beginning. While accepting Cutajar’s resignation, Prime Minister Abela praised Cutajar’s valuable work over the past few years. He also referred to the case of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, where he said that the Police force’s work was crucial in the resultant arrest of four people in connection with this case.
The Prime Minister also stated that a new method, which is more appropriate for the selection of the Police Commissioner will be discussing at Cabinet level.
