22 men were charged with crimes related to last Monday’s riots at the Safi detention centre. The men hail from Algeria, Chad, Ghana, Sudan and Guinea. At about 7.30 pm on Monday, Police from the Rapid Intervention Unit (RIU) and Zurrieq station were notified of a disturbance at the detention centre. A statement issued by the police said it found a number of men wearing masks, damaging stone walls, which stones were hurled at the police on site. A dormitory as well as a room used by detention officers were also destroyed.
The men were accused of threatening, insulting and resisting detention officers. They were also accused that they were part of a revolt, conspiring to commit a criminal act, breach of public peace and damage to a private property. The men were assisted by an Arabic and French interpreters.
