Most of the teams in the La Liga have made some impressive signing throughout the summer. The clubs have splashed millions for top players in order to improve their squad and get better results in the league or in the major competitions: Champions League and Europa League. This year, the Spanish top tier will be exciting to watch, surely seeing a battle between the top clubs going for the trophy.
After their 26th La Liga trophy, Barca have not been resting on their laurels, avidly participating in the transfer market by purchasing several top players. Frenkie De Jong is the first and the transfer was completed in January, although both clubs agreed that it will be summer transfer. Barca had to pay €75 million to Ajax and he has signed a contract for five years. Their best transfer so far is no doubt that of the Frenchman Antoine Griezman, who joined Barcelona for a reported sum of €120 million from Atletico Madrid. He has signed for five years, with a buy-out clause of €800 million. The current champions have also purchased Neto from Valencia for a reported sum of €26 million. The Brazilian goalkeeper has signed for four years with the club. Another youngster was also purchased and a fee of €18 million was paid for Junior Firpo. The Spaniard came to an agreement with the representatives of the club for a contract until the year 2024.
Los Blancos have surely challenged Barca and other clubs in the race of purchasing players and have also shelled out a lot of money, starting with that of the Belgian national team captain Eden Hazard. Real Madrid bought the Belgian for a sum of €100 million from Chelsea, after many rumours throughout the season. Hazard is allegedly in line to receive a net salary of around €11 million a year. Luka Jovic is also another addition to Zinedine Zidane’s squad. He arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt and a fee of €60 million was paid for the Serbian, signing a contract until the year 2025. Ferland Mendy also signed a six year contract with the La Liga giants. Los Blancos have put in €48 million for the new arrival at the Bernabeu. Another important signing is that of the Brazilian defender Eder Miltao from Porto for a fee of €50 million. This season the club have been looking to purchase promising young players; most of them younger than 22. Rodrygo is surely one of these players who will make an impact this season and will be an asset in the future as he is still 18 years old. A €45 million fee was paid for the Brazilian youngster to Santos.
After the departure of Antoine Griezman, ‘El Atleti’ bought a replacement for a huge fee of €126 million for a promising Portuguese youngster Joao Felix. The wonder kid is said to have a €245 million release clause inserted in his deal. He has signed a contract until the year 2026 and is expected to earn €7 million a year. Felix became the second most expensive teenager in history, behind only Kylian Mbappe after his €180 million move to PSG in 2018. The Portuguese youngster is no doubt expected to do big things after the amount paid by the club for him and after his positive breakthrough season last year. Marcos Llorente was bought from Real Madrid and came at a price of €30 million. The Spaniard has signed a five year contract with Diego Simeone’s squad. After several rumours between Kieran Trippier and Juventus, Atletico ended those rumours and he joined them for a sum of €20 million.
‘The Bats’ have bought the Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillisen from Barcelona for a reported sum of €35 million. He has signed a contract until the year 2023 as he wants more playing time following his three seasons at Barca where he played only 32 games, being always the second option in goal. Maxi Gomez was also purchased this summer following his two years with Celta Vigo. The Uruguayan was bought for a sum of around €15 million.
‘Los Hispalenses’ have been extremely busy this summer purchasing and selling players. Although three top forwards have departed, they have bought players from nearly all positions including the defender Jules Kounde. €25 million were paid for the young Frenchman and signed for five years. Diego Carlos is also another defender added to Lopetegui’s squad for a reported fee of €15 million. Munas Dabbur and Lucas Ocampos are prolific forwards who have also been purchased for €15 million.
Real Betis have made some important signings, hoping to clinch an Europa League spot. Giovani Lo Celso was already on loan last season and this summer he signed a permanent deal with the club and is the highest paid player this summer for Real Betis; he came at a price of €22 million from French giants PSG. The Argentinian signed a contract for four years. Following Lo Celso from the French top tier, Nabil Fekir surprisingly signs for Real Betis for a fee of around €20 million. He arrived from Olympique Lyon and signed until 2023.
Celta have brought in Denis Suarez from Barcelona for a reported sum of €12.90 million signing a contract of four years. Santi Mina joined the club for free looking to improve their attack by the signing of the Spanish forward. Another signing that will surely be an asset for the team is the defender Joseph Aidoo who signed for €8 million from the Belgian giants KRC Genk.
The Segunda Division champions are looking to maintain their positions in Spain’s top tier next season and they have also made some purchases to improve their squad and enjoy the moment that they are in the top division again, after their downfall to a lower division in recent years. The club had to pay a fee of €3 million for Ruben Garcia from Levante. Another signing is that of Chimy Avila from San Lorenzo and signed a four year contract with the promoted side. A €2.50 million fee was paid for the former Barca man, Marc Cardona who also signed a four year contract.
Following Pablo Fornals departure with the English Premier League side West Ham, the club have mostly purchased defenders. Ruben Pena and Raul Albiol are the top transfers of the summer for Villarreal and Pena arrived with the highest amount, a fee of €7.20 million from Eibar. Raul Albiol made his return to the La Liga after his spell in Italy with Napoli. The former Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno was departed for free and signed with the Spanish side for five years.
‘La Real’ have purchased promising youngsters who will no doubt be an asset in the near future. Portu has been signed for a fee of £9 million from Girona. He signed a contract until the year 2024 with the club. A promising youngster from Sweden was bought from Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of £5.85 million who also has four caps with Sweden’s first team including a game against Malta. For a 20 year old youngster from France the club had to pay €4.50 million for him to be a Real Sociedad player. Madibo Sagnan signed a contract for five years. Martin Odegaard came back to the La Liga after several loan spells. The Norwegian is still under contract with Real Madrid as his arrival to Real Sociedad will be only for a year because of his loan.
The market is still active and teams are looking to make some purchases before the league starts. The La Liga transfer market closes on the 2nd of September. Real Betis have made their decision about Lo Celso joining Spurs, they want around €65 million for the Argentinian midfielder. Coutinho is set to join Arsenal on loan. According to the transfers made this summer, the La Liga will be extremely tight and very competitive.
