The Nationalist Party (PN ) is anti-democracy

Posted by Shawshank Redemption on 4th June 2019 in Opinion

The PN has over the years preached in favour of Democracy and on various instances it has criticised the PL (Labour Party) of being the party that hinders democracy in the Republic of Malta.  The PN has however a history that in itself shows that the PN or rather a faction in the PN believes in Democracy only when it  suits them .

Before 2013 we were used to having relatively smaller differences in votes between the PL and the PN. Following the change in electoral legislation prior to the 1987 elections, there was only one victory for the PL in 1996 and the PN took its time to concede to the extent that they were doubting that the indications of the PL (MLP at the time) were correct. However, the PN knew very well that it lost but kept dragging perhaps a miracle happens or they could find something to blame and/or overturn the result. When they conceded it was the time to find a scapegoat which they did and the blame fell on John Dalli in view of the introduction of VAT.

The PN decided not to take the responsibility of deciding on the Divorce matter in Malta and instead shifted the decision on the population through a referendum. It is beyond the scope of this article to comment on what happened in that campaign. However, the conclusion is that PN asked the population to decide but then it did not honour that consultation as its own leader voted against. If he wanted to object to the people’s decision then he should have resigned with immediate effect.

I am commenting about these instances as once again the team that was thrown out in 2013 and that is still within the PN , that is the Gonzi Team are over and over again being anti-democratic. The changed the election structure within the PN hoping that they would once again push one of them forward as leader and yet they did not accept the result. The Party decided in accordance with the statute you made dear Gonzi cronies. However, since it is not your man elected then you keep damaging the Part and at the end o f the day Malta because Malta deserves a better opposition and a PN which is cleaned up from these cronies.
