It is known to all that Prof Arnold Cassola has been a stable figure in Maltese Politics albeit never making it to Parliament. However, he has been consistent in his views and certainly has always put Malta’s interest first, something the main parties may not always state (although they do).
The electorate must certainly remember his various stances particularly on the Environment and on the European Union. Today all parties endorse what he used to say during his Alternattiva Demokratika days. His problem was that he was not always surrounded by the right people within Alternattiva Demokratika (AD). Although one must state that in the 2003 elections his colleagues and himself did a major sacrifice in coming out with the motto “ it-2 jghodd ukoll”. It must have been very hard for them after all that work for membership in the EU. It must have been hard also to accept the stance taken by Dr Fenech Adami, PN leader at the time, who basically asked them to withdraw from elections for the benefit of Malta…. Pardon me!?!?!? Malta or your benefit Dr Fenech Adami? In Maltese one says “ prova jarmihom”….. very typical of PN!
Obviously the AD did not withdraw but basically told the Maltese voters to vote PN if they agree with EU membership and to give them the No 2. It was not enough for the PN… as usual… and they campaigned against the No 2 for AD.
Fifteen years later, we are celebrating the anniversary of EU membership and we have the opportunity to thank Mr. Cassola for his work in Politics, for his valuable input for the EU, for his stance on our values (and children) such the categoric stand against as abortion and for protecting constantly our environment. I may have not always agreed with him and probably I do not agree on certain things but one thing I can say with certainty Cassola dejjem impurtah ghax Malta dejjem kienet f’Qalbu.
