€80,000 for more innovation in the promotion of cultural heritage in localities in the south of Malta

Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi presided over the signing of a project, which will be carried out by the Żurrieq Local Council with the help of European funds, for the promotion of the historical and cultural heritage of the locality through a digital application.

Parliamentary Secretary Zrinzo Azzopardi stated that this is one of eleven projects which form part of the third measure forming part of the LEADER project administered by the Gal Xlokk Foundation. These projects are being carried out with the investment of €80,000  European funds, which are being invested in a series of projects which provide beneficiaries with the opportunity to come up with new ideas to promote and share information related to cultural heritage, while setting up ‘Heritage Trails’, to link different attractions and sites of touristic importance in the south of Malta.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that, with these projects, we are promoting the historical and cultural heritage in an innovative manner, making it more attractive for both young people and tourists alike who come to visit our localities.

“With this measure, we are promoting and preserving the cultural heritage in the areas of the South of Malta, ensuring they are given the due importance,” said Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi.

The Mayor of Żurrieq Rita Grima said that with this application the Local Council will be able to promote Żurrieq’s cultural heritage. This project, financed with European funds, is a step towards digitalising the work of the council. She explained that the main section of the application will be the cultural one, however, it will also have another function whereby it will be informing people on what will happen in the locality, whilst including information that is of interest for residents, making the work of the council more efficient.

The Gal Xlokk Foundation administers the LEADER program in the South of Malta, which gives opportunities to the local councils and organisations to apply for funding for projects for the preservation and promotion of the Maltese culture.
