Rapper and producer Kanye West has stated that he is no longer a supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, claiming that he entered the presidential race to win it, during an interview published on Wednesday July 8.
The rapper continues to take strides in advancing his career and diversifying, after announcing that he would run for president on Saturday July 4 through a tweet that said “We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States!”
West was a very vocal supporter of Trump, yet during the interview he stated that he is “taking the red hat off”, in reference to the trademark red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps during Trump’s campaign in 2016.
West added that “Like anything I’ve ever done in my life, I’m doing to win.”
Whilst West has not officially registered as a candidate, formed an electoral campaign committee, or made any traditional steps towards running for office, his tweet was retweeted more than half a million times, with it also having 1.2 million likes on Twitter.
West’s money and name recognition will prove to be key factors for his campaign, given the immense effect that he has had on music and of lifestyle as a whole.
Responding to the campaign, President Trump said that West’s campaign “would be a great trial run” before the presidential election of 2024, practically completely dismissing West’s insistence to get elected in 2020.
Trump also added that his campaign is “very interesting”, yet “It’d have to be limited to certain states because in some states the deadline has been missed.”
Trump still acknowledged that he is monitoring the rapper’s plans very closely, being a solid competitor for the presidential spot.
West has not provided any details with regards to his presidential campaign, but whatever he plans to do, it will be very interesting to see.
This marks a time where campaigns are being started by people that have not been involved with politics as much, something that Trump himself did in 2016, when he ran for president and eventually won the race.
West has won numerous awards, including Grammy Awards, World Music Awards, and plenty of others, but winning the Presidential Election would be something that goes over and above anything else in his career.
