Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, together with Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, visited Gozitan company Gozo Distillers Ltd, a start-up which made use of European funds.
The Minister for Gozo said that this project appertaining to Gozo Distillers, with the investment of half a million euro co-financed through European funds, meant that this company was able to produce various typically Gozitan alcoholic products. Minister Camilleri stated that, ‘it has been his pleasure to visit start-ups which invested in innovative products in Gozo as they benefitted from European funds’. The Gozitan Minister explained that an investment like this leaves a positive impact not solely on the company, but also on the employees, as it increases employability and as a result generates more work in Gozo for Gozitans.
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi sustained that the success of this company is proof of the benefits brought about by European funds. More than 1,000 companies benefitted from European funds, with the majority being small and medium enterprises, so that they have the capital to invest in their companies, grow their operations, whilst increasing their competitive advantage both locally and internationally. The direct injection of seventy-three (73) million euro in Maltese and Gozitan companies through European funds has led to more economic growth, as our economy became stronger and more diversified in order to be able to compete in the international market. The Parliamentary Secretary concluded by saying that, “through these incentives they will be able to continue distribute wealth in our country.”
The director of the company Gozo Distillers Ltd stated that this start-up wouldn’t have been possible if there wasn’t any financial aid through European funds, which was a stepping-stone for them to reach their long term objective, that of distilling alcohol. This investment led to the acquisition of equipment for fermentation, distillation, bottling and ageing equipment, in order to create a production and packaging line to distillate alcoholic products. Gozo Distillers Ltd will support locals by purchasing raw materials from local agents in order to produce its own products.
