A press statement published today by the Department of Information refers to the article ‘Reporters Without Borders reacts to government’s denial of access to journalist on Republic Day’ featured on The Shift.
Neither the government nor the Department of Information denied access to any media to the Republic Day events. Indeed, all media personnel who submitted their application to access the Republic Day events venues were accredited and are indeed covering the events.
Access Cards, valid for government events, are invariably issued by the Department of Information once the editor of the applicant’s media organisation authenticates the veracity of the application.
Ms Caroline Muscat was informed that applications for DOI Access Cards are done online and was also provided with the relative link. She was also informed that Access Cards are issued within hours, at the most, as can be verified by local journalists.
Unlike other journalists, she chose not to submit her application for an Access Card.
Like any other country during national events, media are requested only to abide by standard operating procedures related to access the official venues where the event(s) will be taking place.
