While Prime Minister Joseph Muscat will be attending the Council of Europe, President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli has urged European leaders to take a stand on Malta.
Sassoli has presented a letter, written by Juan Fernando Lopez and Sophie in’t Veld Agiular, who were part of the fact-finding delegation in Malta last week, to Council President, Charles Michel.
“Considering the swift evolution of the situation … we believe it is important that the Heads of Government take a position. Malta is part of the European Union and the institutions within have a responsibility to ensure that European values are respected around the EU,” Sassoli said. The letter stated that the conclusions of the Malta delegation were very disturbing and require immediate action.
“The delegation expressed its concern about the fact that Muscat’s resignation is being delayed until 12 January … we are afraid that this constitutes a serious risk, real or perceived, that the murder investigation is compromised,” the letter concluded.
