The private label brand 3 Leaves, owned by J. Calleja Import & Export Ltd, is aiming to contribute to plastic free July by trying to convince others to use less single use plastic bags.
The company is doing this by printing and distributing several cotton bags to shoppers so that these can be used instead of plastic bags. The bags are set to be distributed to small and medium-sized shops due to their rather small size.
Whilst the company’s managing director, Brian Calleja, is aware that his own company is still forced to make use of plastic for the packaging of imported goods as he claims that there is “no way to eliminate that,” he hopes that this initiative will “in turn reduce the end customers’ demands for plastic bags.”
Mr Calleja also added that they work as hard as they can to reuse and reduce the use of plastic throughout the whole of their business operations.
The company also tries to reuse carton boxes that are used to deliver goods to shops. Mr Calleja stated that whilst from “a marketing point of view” it would make much more sense to deliver items in boxes that have the company’s logo on them, “in order to reduce waste, we reuse boxes bearing other company logos, even if they belong to our competitors, since in this way we make sure that the usage of carton boxes is extended, which results in less waste.”
