Sources close to the OPM have confirmed that Dr Joseph Muscat is expected to remain Prime Minister of Malta at least until the next general election. This was reasserted in the light of the recent European Union leadership race, wherein, according to sources close to the PL, Joseph Muscat, while touted as a favourite and close to replacing Donald Tusk as President of the European Council, the role was finally assigned to Charles Michel, Prime Minister of Belgium.
Muscat has previously been mentioned as one of a group, where Michel Barnier of PPE was anticipated as the next President of the European Commission, Joseph Muscat, from the Socialist EP group as the President of the European Council, Margaret Vestagher to replace Federica Mogherini as High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Manfred Weber as President of the European Parliament.
If Prime Minister Joseph Muscat had ultimately been chosen for the role of President of the European Council, he would have had to resign his post as Prime Minister until the end of October.
In view of the latest developments, it now appears that the Labour Party’s predicted race for the top post will be postponed until at least after the next general election. Meanwhile, the controversial Ursula von de Leyen will be the first woman to occupy the post as leader of the European Commission.
