The last fall of buildings close to a construction site led to the Prime Minister taking drastic action by supposedly suspending all excavation and demolition works. It has been a rushed decision which started to be corrected a couple of hours later after consulting the industry. To add insult to injury many just ignored this statement and proceeded with works as reported in many social media posts by citizens. Furthermore, some question whether the Prime Minister has the Authority to solely give orders to Authorities.
It is easy to form an opinion with hindsight, however, the general public and many lobbyists have been warning about this situation and it is only when things turned fatal that the Prime Minister woke up and decided finally that business is important but lives are more important than that. It seems now that we will go through a rushed process to try to get things in order. In the meantime, those who took all necessary precautions will carry the consequences of costs due to this drastic action taken solely by the Prime Minister.
In his statement however, the Prime Minister was not clear if excavation works by Infrastructure Malta will be put on hold as well. It is easy for many to criticise private developers and architects but no one seems to dare talk on damages done by Infrastructure Malta itself for obvious reasons! Infrastructure Malta works did cause issues to certain residents too and as reported in the case of private business Infrastructure Malta just bullied over people in the name of #gettingthingsdone . This seems to be happening in simple road works. Can one imagine what will happen with the major tunnel works planned to start?
Will the Prime Minister act or will we need also some tragedy for Infrastructure Malta to #getthingsdoneproperlyandsafely ?
