The counting process during these MEP elections had not even finished and certain PN activists were already calling for Delia resignation. Maybe with an immediate reaction one would say with such a defeat Delia should resign. I personally do not like the man but I always try to take an objective opinion.
The problem of the Nationalist Party did not start now. It started the moment Gonzi went into Power. On various occasions this portal has criticised the arrogance of this man and his team as well as the lack of vision of the PN under his administration. The vision was a continuation of that of Fenech Adami to get Malta in the EU and eventually the Euro. That gone, Gonzi came up with nothing new and indeed the electorate decided to get rid of him. He says he did well and thank you very much with the usual arrogance. However, the damage was done as the amount of people that his arrogant team argued, fought, insulted and injured was huge. With all this he now feels the right to tell or suggest what the PN leader should do following 2019 elections. Please spare us!
To insult the electorate, the PN elected Gonzi’s cronies as leader with the name of Simon Busuttil. Actually nothing changed, as the arrogance continued at the usual momentum if not more. The PN may have been right in the corruption allegations but everything was focused on that with no real propositions or vision for the country and NEITHER a guarantee to stop corruption given its own past. So more people were convinced that these Gonzi people need a further message and again threw them in opposition in a humiliating way.
Fast Forward a couple of years and the newly elected leader from outside the party Adrian Delia faces the MEP elections. The Gonzi cronies did all the best to ensure an even larger loss of votes but at the same time they elect their associates in the mess. We have seen the largest internal anti party ever experienced. They all started coming to live as soon as the results started to come out. Poor PN, the Gonzi team trying to destroy it as its either them in power or what they say or else they prefer humiliating the party. Same as they did with Malta in the European Union. Shame. However, thanks for reminding us what kind of people you are and as long as you act in this manner many will keep voting any other imaginable party but the PN irrespective of who the leader is. Delia faced all this within his party.
On his part Delia, fell into the trap of negativism that the Gonzi team are known for so he is not seen to be strong enough to stick to the New Way he promised and come up with a constructive vision. So he contributed to his own defeat by lacking the leadership skills.
In spite of the above, Delia staying may be the turnaround solution for the PN. The Party needs to encourage him to build a team that opens up to the people and show that arrogance is not there. The people like Jason Azzopardi, Simon Busuttil, RCC (we forgot his name), Karol Aquilina, Andrew Borg Cardona just to mention a few should show their loyalty to the country and the party and stay quiet and take a step back. The people have not turned its back to the PN but to the Gonzi and Gonzi cronies. Realise that or you will be in opposition for another two decades.
