Road signs serve for a number of purposes. One purpose they serve is to alert drivers to the speed limit for a particular roadway. They also help bring attention to construction work, and hazards, such as sharp turns. These are just a few of the many ways that signs could reduce chaos on roads.
There are many examples that one could bring such as junction signs, route markers, road lane and alternative route signs. It seems that Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta (coincidentally under the same Ministry) are aware of this. What they have not learned is that these are means of notification so you need to be aware before you arrive at the actual danger! It seems they also lack proper paint to cover past signs and/or lanes…. Have a look at Marsa lanes in front of One Productions and you will disorientate yourself.
Regulatory Signs – These signs include stop signs, yield signs, turn and lane use signs, selective exclusion signs, parking regulation signs, traffic signal signs, road closed signs…… but sometimes we forget that we need to notify drivers beforehand! Have a look at the buses making u turns in certain roads recently due to the sudden signage…. Total Chaos. And what about the continuous changing of directions without clear warning signs? Warning Signs include turn and curve warnings, intersection signs, advance traffic control signs, merge and lane transition warnings, narrowed road signs, pedestrian crossings, speed advisory signs, speed bump notices, as well as construction related signage (in most parts of Malta) totally inexistent.
Signs are important because they help maintain safe driving conditions. Without these signs, no one would know how fast to drive, what direction to drive down a road, whether or not the roads being driven on have an upcoming hazard, or whether they are approaching a merge. The non appropriate signage is leading to pure chaos in certain areas. Signs help reduce the rate of car accidents but we have been hearing of regular accidents.
If you are in need of signs, construction and work zone signage, hardware and posts for signs, or markings, look no further because Infrastructure and Transport Malta have them….. you just need to show them how to use them.
