One year since a new leader of the opposition was anointed and still no sign of a coherent opposition on the horizon. A year of unprecedented turbulence within the Nationalist Party; mini coup d’états, sabotage and plenty of vultures circling lustily in the hope of any prospective bloodletting.
Dr Adrian Delia was elected by the PN General Counsel, clamouring with the now long-forgotten battle cry of ‘New Way’, which for a few weeks at least, seemed to pump new life into the flagging lifeblood of the now almost defunct Nationalist Party.
But it seems as if the old maxim that ‘If voting changes anything, it should be abolished’ is strictly being adhered to at Tal-Pieta. Yes, the people who voted in Dr Delia are being completely ignored, because in true arrogant style, so endemic to the Nationalist Party, ‘the little people have simply no idea what’s best for the party’. So, in blatant disregard for the will of the people (and these are THEIR people) they continue with business as usual…
The old guard, still reeling from not one but two unprecedented electoral losses still harbours the deluded notion that their way is the right way. This together with Dr Delia’s penchant for historical gaffes, including one too many U-turns on almost every subject under the sweltering Maltese sun, is sounding the death knell for what was once a revered political party which, regardless of which side of the divide one stands on, was a huge force to be reckoned with.
For Dr Delia, obstacles of monumental proportions are being carefully choreographed every single day through one form of rebellion or another by the different factions within the party; all in a bid to further usurp the leadership’s authority. It almost makes you feel sorry for the opposition leader, who, by his own hand is quite capable of making a huge mess of his role, let alone surrounded by a multitude of bloodhounds constantly sniffing hungrily at his heels.
Leadership qualities, as this past year has clearly revealed are not within the Opposition Leader’s grasp, but these same qualities are also severely lacking in the Opposition Leader-in-waiting (or should that read ex-Opposition Leader-still-waiting-for-another-turn?) It is highly apparent that the opposition party is functioning between a rock and a hard place or to put it quite succinctly… whichever way you look at it they’re royally sc****d!
But speaking of the ex-Opposition Leader-still-waiting-for-another-turn (I believe this turn of phrase presents a much truer picture of the current state of affairs) it is high time Dr Simon Busuttil cuts his losses and lets the party he supposedly loves, rise from the ashes of the destruction he himself has wrought. But no, he still believes that as champion of justice and truth (a €1.2 million magisterial inquiry notwithstanding) he can win not only the PN voters he spectacularly managed to alienate during his disastrous tenure, but also the rest of the electorate.
Relegating his followers (and sadly the rest of us) with his usual pious theatrics, mainly to the nauseous tune that despite the mighty opposing forces he will remain the sole voice of ‘the truth’, it is becoming more apparent by the day that Dr Busuttil is really willing and able to cut his nose to spite his face (there is a more colourful Maltese way of saying this, but for the sake of decorum I will limit myself). Who cares if the Nationalist Party is on its deathbed? With his regular shenanigans, still clinging to a dead blogger’s claim to fame, it is a pity that Dr Busuttil can expend so much precious energy into the projection of his ‘saintly’ image but couldn’t give a fig for the wellbeing of his party.
His regular laugh out loud forays on any media that would have him, have only recently culminated into the howler of the century, one which will go down in the annals of entertaining political history for all our future generations. In an unprecedented dramatic twist, Dr Busuttil is now said to be “fearing for his life”. Perhaps another attention-seeking stunt similar to the ‘empty files saga’ (anyone remember those?) or his hand on heart, promise to Jesus, tearful ramblings that Egrant belongs to the Prime Minister’s wife?
If Dr Busuttil wants to be taken seriously, then he should take his concerns to the police or better still take a leaf out of his famous friends’ book and report this to the German Police (I am sure one of his many European friends would oblige). But as one social media commentator glibly puts it, “Why we should anyone want to get rid of Dr Busuttil? Besides his entertainment value, he was, is and always will be a winning ace for the Labour Party.”
So, there you have it ladies and gentlemen. We are lumped with an opposition that is literally tearing itself apart, where ego takes precedence over the wellbeing of the party and most of all the country, where change and renewal is an alien concept and where most tellingly, the ‘little people’ have no say whatsoever… not even on what once was their very own home turf!
