The catering business is experiencing an unprecedented growth thanks to the current economic boom experienced in the country. This growth brings with it its difficulties and catering establishments are doing their best to overcome various challenges. ACE understands that this economic boom may create challenges also to Local Councils in terms of traffic management and other issues related to more people visiting localities. However, these challenges cannot be solved by trying to attack the livelihood of entrepreneurs.
It is a known fact that people like to dine, have snacks or drinks outdoors especially during the summer months they prefer particularly in seaside locations. Indeed, many of ACE members claim that they are usually empty inside and full outside. On the same grounds, one may also ask that no one stays on his door step or in balconies in traffic areas. In a democratic country people are free to stay indoors or outdoors irrespective of what others may think of the area
On the security issue, ACE refers to various European Cities were catering establishments are present on roads where there is substantial traffic. In such cities, normally the local council ensures that safety measures are in place on the roads.
Local Councils and Transport Malta should work hand in hand to improve the traffic management and road safety to ensure that the localities’ businesses continue to flourish and improve their respective area. With respect to the recent statements by the Gzira Mayor, ACE states that there are no areas in Gzira which are not residential and consequently traffic should be controlled in this perspective.
Gzira has like other prime destinations become a tourist hotel location, and it is only natural that locals and tourists alike make the most of our Maltese weather potential by maximising alfresco dining.
ACE feels that the statements made that pedestrian space is not available is largely incorrect.
ACE agrees that the local council of Gzira should invest more in embellishing the promenade and in a better traffic management system for the benefit of residents, visitors and businesses alike.
