Partit Demokratiku (PD) stands for human rights and solidarity with those in need, and expects the government to honour its international responsibilities. Migration is not expected to subside in the coming decades given climate change, geo-political turmoil, and war. PD maintains that the government and opposition should unite to establish a common policy on migration, which would be pursued through changes of legislature, preserving Malta’s well-being whilst respecting the dignity of other humans seeking sanctuary.
Let us not forget that migrants would not be obliged to risk their lives crossing the Sahara desert and the cruel Mediterranean Sea to apply for asylum, if embassies of EU Member States in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa accepted asylum applications in situ.
Frontier countries such as Italy, and over-populated Malta, cannot be expected to bear the brunt of the migration deluge. The EU burden sharing-mechanisms should kick into action to share migrants rescued outside European Search and Rescue Regions, in a proportionate manner amongst all EU Member States.
Pressure should be consequently placed on the EU to establish humanitarian corridors for those in need of protection and for legal migration.
