Much is being said about the promotion of women in the different sectors of society.  Two specific measures seem to stand out from the rest.  One is the LEAD programme led by the Labour Party.  This programme is to promote women in politics through mentoring.  The other is setting a minimum percentage of women on Government and Parastatal Boards.  Both measures are commendable and are based on a sincere wish to promote women.  However, one might be inclined to think that these proposals seem to have originated from the logic pertaining to the male species of humanity.

The LEAD programme is to mentor women and be their spring board into politics.  But is it really the case that women need mentoring?  What about the men in politics.  With the stupidity that I sometimes hear resonating in parliament, I sincerely believe that some men need mentoring much, much more than women, at least to achieve the basic common sense which should prevail in our supposedly evolved human species.  Sometimes I am actually led to believe that Darwin’s Theory of Evolution might have missed out some male specimens.  I think that women need the obliteration of the societal psychological barriers which stereotype women as the less-intellectually-gifted- sex or, adding insult to injury, the weak sex!

The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become….
I know that I can make it….
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong….

Although the concept of stipulating a minimum percentage of women on boards might be decked with good intentions however it feels inappropriate to women who have no problems to stand on their own two feet and fight back the prejudices tied to their sex.  Rather than establishing a percentage it would be more dignified for women that board positions are selected on the basis of expertise, skills and capabilities rather than be limited to political appointments.

The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time
You squander a right that’s mine
My light will shine so brightly
It will blind you…..

Women want justice.  Woman want equal opportunities.  Woman want their ideas, opinions, skills and expertise to be respected as much as those of men.  Women want to know that the diversity between men and women is appreciated and not considered as a liability.  Women want to know that they will enjoy the same grades and salaries as other men doing their same job.  Women want to know that they do not need to work harder than men to obtain a decent level of professional respect in relation to men with less skills.  Women want to know that their word is given the same weight as that of a man.  Woman want the basic rights which they are entitled to.  Without those basic rights, it is useless to fantasise on any other ‘good intentions’.

….. sisters
When they insist we’re just not good enough
When we know better
Just look ’em in the eyes and say
I’m gonna do it anyway…..
Something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho’ you’re doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong….

The song being quoted and interpreted is ‘Something So Strong’ by Labi Siffre.
