Minister for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella held a bilateral meeting with State Secretary at the German Federal Foreign Office Markus Florian Ederer. State Secretary Ederer, who was in Malta to participate in a meeting of EU State Secretaries and Secretaries Generals, was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Malta Gudrun Sräga.
Recent events in Libya, Syria, relations with Turkey, the growing relevance that Africa has acquired on an international level, Brexit, and migration were discussed in detail. Minister Vella also gave an overview of the priorities for Malta’s upcoming EU Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Vella pointed out that there are several points of convergence between the policies adopted and goals envisaged by Malta and Germany on most issues that were discussed. The increasing attention that Germany has been allocating to pressing issues in the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood is a highly valued one, Foreign Minister Vella stated. On his part Markus Florian Ederer assured Minister Vella that Germany will support the priorities that Malta has identified for its six-month Presidency term.
