Euro area international trade in goods surplus €26.5 bn – €0.5 bn surplus for EU28

Euro area

The first estimate for euro area (EA19) exports of goods to the rest of the world in September 2016 was €176.7 billion, an increase of 2% compared with September 2015 (€173.2 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €150.2 bn, a fall of 2% compared with September 2015 (€154.0 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €26.5 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in September 2016, compared with +€19.2 bn in September 2015. Intra-euro area trade remained nearly stable at €148.3 bn in September 2016, compared with September 2015.

In January to September 2016, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world remained nearly stable at
€1 512.0 bn compared with January-September 2015, while imports fell to €1 307.1 bn (a decrease of 3%). As a result the euro area recorded a surplus of €204.8 bn, compared with +€169.1 bn in January-September 2015. Intra-euro area trade remained nearly stable at €1 267.4 bn in January-September 2016, compared with January-September 2015.

European Union

The first estimate for extra-EU28 exports of goods in September 2016 was €147.2 billion, down by 1% compared with September 2015 (€148.9 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €146.7 bn, up by 1% compared with September 2015 (€145.2 bn). As a result, the EU28 recorded a €0.5 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in September 2016, compared with +€3.7 bn in September 2015. Intra-EU28 trade remained nearly stable at €271.4 bn in September 2016, compared with September 2015.

In January to September 2016, extra-EU28 exports of goods stood at €1 277.4 bn (a decrease of 4% compared with January-September 2015), and imports at €1 264.6 bn (a decrease of 3% compared with January-September 2015). As a result, the EU28 recorded a surplus of €12.7 bn, compared with +€31.6 bn in January-September 2015. Intra-EU28 trade rose to €2 309.4 bn in January-September 2016, +1% compared with January-September 2015.
