A terse press release published by the Department of Information said that the Prime Minister has left Malta for a business trip to the United States accompanied by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, Central Bank Deputy Governor Sandro Demarco and MFSA Chairman Joe Bannister. The press release further states that the delegation will be holding discussions with ‘a number of decision makers and companies in the financial services sector’. It gave no further details.
Sources who spoke to this portal on condition of anonymity said that it was unusual for the MFSA Chairman to accompany an official government delegation on such a sensitive trip. No details were forthcoming when enquiring the nature of the discussions and with which companies these were being held.
Other sources said that it was highly unusual for such a high powered Maltese delegation to visit the United States on the eve of a general election which takes place on Tuesday. This is due to the fact that several officials in key government positions are currently in a transitional phase due to the uncertain outcome of the said election. It is not known if the press has accompanied the delegation.
